BaseCase FAQs
A BaseCase app is an interactive presentation, which is “driven” by a spreadsheet. Conceptually, it is like a combination of PowerPoint (for presentation) and Excel (for computing results). BaseCase apps can take many forms: interactive slide decks, dashboards, e-posters, value summaries, value dossiers, embeddable calculators, etc.
Yes. Apps are fully flexible, you can change the lay-out as well as the data. You can work with us to develop country adaptations, work with your solution provider or we can train your affiliates to do the changes themselves.

To run BaseCase offline on your laptop or desktop, you will need to download the BaseCase Windows App.
If you have converted your model to a BaseCase spreadsheet, you can make changes directly in BaseCase. Once published these changes are instantly available. You can also make changes in Excel and then just re-upload your model. If you are making structural changes, make sure you check your interface and reconnect your inputs and outputs so your model computes correctly.
We use Excel style-references to connect the presentation to cells in Excel – it’s easy for anyone with basic Excel knowledge to understand.
Yes. When you upload an Excel model, it is converted to a native BaseCase spreadsheet. This allows your spreadsheet to run locally and no connection to the server is required to recompute your spreadsheet. For this reason, your spreadsheet will also compute faster.
The BaseCase format supports a broad range of Excel formulas, accommodating the vast majority of models commonly used in the life sciences industry.
We continuously update our engine with new Excel functions and perform extensive compatibility testing.
In addition, you can export the model from BaseCase in excel format.
BaseCase has been built so it runs on all devices. These include desktop and laptops both Windows and Mac, and mobile devices including tablets.
A BaseCase Content Developer is someone who has completed the training and is recognized by BaseCase as qualified to build apps on the platform. Learn more about the certification training.

Microsoft Excel is an excellent tool, used throughout healthcare for complex modeling.
However, it is not an ideal platform for distributing interactive presentations, sales tools or apps:
– Complex user interfaces (UIs) are difficult to create in Excel, and require visual basic coding (VBA) expertise.
– Interactive Excel presentations cannot be styled to meet the high standards of a corporate marketing department.
– Excel presentations can be easily ‘broken’ (by editing the wrong field, or deleting the wrong content).
– Incompatibilities between various versions of Excel (2003, 2007, 2010, Mac, Windows, etc) can make distribution problematic.
– When you distribute an Excel presentation, you “lose control” of your data and it is therefore not possible to:
– Revoke access to an Excel presentation you have emailed to a customer.
– Review how your presentation is being used (or misused!).
– Remotely update your presentation – so you end up sending around “value-presentation-revision-6.xls”, and hoping that people use your updated version.
In contrast BaseCase is a centrally managed cloud platform which addresses all of these issues.
